When I get insomnia, it's nearly always the kind where you Just Can't Get To Sleep. Hours of tossing and turning, but once I fall asleep that's it for the next eight hours (or the four hours until my alarm goes off, usually, because it likes to strike when I have to be up early). Just lately, though, I seem to have switched to waking up an hour or two before my alarm, still tired, and completely unable to doze off again. So I wondered: when you go insomniac, how does it manifest?

Combination of the above - I didn't tick because I don't fall asleep OK. I can't fall asleep for hours. Then when I do fall asleep, I wake up half an hour later. And half an hour later. And then when I do get back to sleep, I wake up before the alarm.

Me and sleep... it's like a long distance relationship. He says he loves me, but he never calls.

Some nights it's the first kind, some nights it's the second.

When I do sleep it tends to be very lightly, which a) means it's not very refreshing sleep anyway and b) means that I wake up at the tiniest sound and then CAN'T FALL ASLEEP AGAIN FOR HOURS AND HOURS OH GOD WHY.

My main problem tends to be that I have difficulty being sleepy (and thus going to bed) when I should be for my time zone. If I go to lie down too early, I end up staring at the ceiling, mind racing, and I usually only have the patience to do that for about a half an hour or so before I give up and go do other things.

Lately, I've also been having problems sleeping through the night. Once I wake up, usually I'm up for a good while.

The most frustrating part is when, for example, I go to bed at 10pm, wake up at 2am, then start getting tired again around 7 or 8am which sometimes is when I need to be getting up for good that day. Argh.

That's how it usually runs for me. Can't go to sleep when I need to, and if I try, it's just misery. Even if I do get to sleep at some point, I just wake back up and it's useless to try anymore.

I am becoming convinced that I in fact am non-24-hour, and the attempts to make myself so result in all sorts of entertaining side effects. Sometimes I'm 22. Sometimes I'm 26, or even 28. Sometimes I'm 32, but that's stretching it, and even I know I'm doing something dumb.

MissKat is gently nudging me in the direction of getting myself evaluated for my sleep problems because it has been responsible for a good 75%+ of my sick-calls throughout my employment history. Cannot sleep, then amazingly exhausted and nonfunctional for work.

This is true! I can fake it a little better for a little longer.
